Story Starters

Nestled atop historic Donner Summit where the Sierra Nevada’s first railroad line once stopped sits Sugar Bowl Resort, a resort truly like no other. The resort has been family owned since 1939, and the goals of the Villagers remain the same as they did more than 75 years ago: shareholder dividends are paid not in dollars, but in the experience. While visiting Sugar Bowl, guests will notice much of the historic charm is still maintained within the modern resort. Touches of Austrian character and Bavarian stylings provide a glimpse into Hannes Schroll's and other founders’ vision for this unique mountain resort.

For passionate skiing families and adventure enthusiasts alike, Sugar Bowl-Royal Gorge offers an extraordinary mountain resort experience with four great peaks, endless cross country trails, a world-class ski team and academy, and a magical snowbound village. Sugar Bowl offers the closest skiing to the Sacramento area, is easily accessible from I-80, and is known for its short lift lines, uncrowded slopes and unrivaled access to backcountry terrain.

The resort continues to reinvest in the guest experience with more than $20 million in proceeds from real estate sales over the past several years being put right back into resort improvements including new chairlifts, facilities and Villager amenities for all to enjoy.
